Betfair was founded in August 1999 by Andrew Black and Edward Wray. In its’ first month of trading Betfair attracted £120,000 of bets resulting in Black and Wray receiving an award for Emerging Entrepreneur of the year in 2002. Betfair is now the largest betting exchange in the world. Betfair are licensed by the Government of Gibraltar and regulated by the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner under the Gambling Act 2005.
Betfair and betting exchanges alike have not escaped criticism, whilst John Brown was the managing director of William Hill he was the most outspoken critic of betting exchanges and he called for them to be banned. He insisted that they were illegal as they allow customers to take bets without holding a gambling licence. This argument was support by the other two of the top three UK bookmakers Ladbrokes and Gala Coral who also believe that betting exchanges heighten the likelihood of corruption. Ladbrokes alleged that at least one race was fixed every day. In 2004 Jockeys Kieren Fallon, and Sean Fox were suspected of foul play after Fallon appeared to race without exerting any effort and Fox appeared to dismount during a race. These incidents were suspected to be linked to unusual levels of gambling activity at betting exchanges. Following this a committee of peers and MP’s looked at assessing Britain’s gambling laws. The outcome of this meeting was a Draft Gambling Bill which recommended that punters laying a large amount in betting exchanges should be forced to obtain a licence. Betfair and Betdaq strongly opposed this Bill, Sir Robert Horton (former chairman of BP and Railtrack) who was appointed as non-executive chairman of Betfair stated that the number of professional punters using exchanges is immaterial and most of these are licensed bookmakers who are hedging their positions. Horton added that betting exchanges must not be forced abroad. It transpired that the government under Gordon Brown ignored the recommendation and allowed betting exchanges to continue operating in their current form. In 2005 Betfair obtained a Maltese gambling licence which was seen as threat to leave the UK if there was a change in the gambling laws.
In 2004 Betfair entered the poker market with an agreement with CryptoLogic and in 2005 they acquired the Danish poker website PokerChamps. In 2006 Betfair was issued a licence to operate in Australia, later that year Betfair also launched Betfair Mobile allowing punters to place bets via their mobile phones in time for the world cup. During this busy year Betfair also launched a casino platform. In 2007 Betfair launched the financial trading platform Tradefair. In 2008 Betfair Arcade was launched which initially offered sixty games. In 2009 Betfair became the betting partner of Manchester United FC. In 2010 Betfair launched Betfair TV and they floated on the London Stock Exchange.
Betfair now employ over 2,000 people worldwide and is a FTSE 250 listed company. They have over 3 million registered customers and process 7 million transactions every day.

Betfair Casino - £200 Welcome Bonus
-
Specific Betfair Casino Welcome Bonus Terms and Conditions;
1. This offer is only open to new players who have never before transferred real money to Betfair Casino. If you have played on another Betfair product but not on the Casino, then you are eligible.
2. This offer is valid until the 31st December 2012.
3. This promotion is limited to one account per customer.
4. The minimum deposit required to trigger each bonus is £25. If you deposit a sum less than £25, it will count as one of your three deposits, but it will not trigger the award of a bonus. Therefore, if you make a first deposit of £10, and a second of £30, then the £30 will be matched at 50%.
5. Your first bonus will be equal to your first ever real money transfer to your Betfair Casino account, up to a maximum of £100
Your second bonus will be matched to the value of 50% of your second real money transfer to your Betfair Casino account, up to a maximum of £50
Your third bonus will be matched to the value of 50% of your third real money transfer to your Betfair Casino account, up to a maximum of £50 To take advantage of all three deposit bonuses, each bonus must be triggered and accepted within 30 days of your first transfer.
To claim your bonuses you must click 'accept' in the pop up that will appear when you login to the Download Casino or open a game in the Instant Play Casino after triggering a bonus by making a real money transfer to the Casino.
6. If you choose to accept a bonus, a sum equivalent to twenty (20) times the total of (i) the bonus amount and (ii) deposited sum (to the extent that it is matched by the bonus) must be wagered on Eligible Games within seven (7) days of accepting the bonus. For example, a first transfer of £150 would be matched with a £100 bonus for a total of £200 with a wagering requirement (£100 bonus and the £100 of your deposit that was matched) of 20 times, so £4,000.
7. While the wagering requirements of the bonus are being met, all winnings (on all games, not just eligible games) and/or further deposits will be
- (i) first, used to first top up the bonus balance to its value when awarded, then
- (ii) second, used to top up the cash balance to its value when the bonus was applied, and
- (iii) third, accrued as 'pending winnings'.
8. When wagering towards the requirements of a bonus, 'pending winnings' are always used first, then real cash funds and finally bonus funds.
9. If you make a withdrawal before the wagering requirements of the bonus have been met, you will forfeit the bonus balance and all pending winnings.
10. If you trigger a bonus while another is active, the bonuses will queue in your bonus balance. The sum of all bonuses will be shown in your casino balance, however all wagering on eligible games will accrue towards the requirements of the first bonus to be accepted.
11. * With the exception of Zero Lounge games, all Download Casino Games will qualify towards the wagering requirements for your Welcome Bonus ('Eligible Games').
12. Stakes on some of our games do not count in full towards the wagering requirement - instead they have a % contribution as outlined in our standard game weightings.
-
EXAMPLE:
If you wagered £100 on Slots and £500 playing Blackjack, your Slots bets will contribute 100%, meaning a £100 contribution to the wagering requirement of this bonus. However, only 20% of your Blackjack stakes will contribute - meaning 20% of £500: £100 is contributed to the wagering requirement.
-
13. If Betfair applies a bonus to your account, and for a period of 90 days following application you do not engage in any activity on Betfair using real funds, Betfair reserves the right to remove the bonus.
14. Betfair Casino reserves the right to withdraw or amend this promotion at any time, and without prior notice.
