Ladbrokes approaches Betdaq for betting exchange deal.
According to Telegraph 8th January 2012 the chief executive of Ladbrokes, Richard Glynn, has approached Betdaq owner Dermot Desmond in an attempt to buy their “pricing and trading skills of a peer-to-peer betting exchange”. It is not thought that Ladbrokes are looking to buy Betdaq but are looking to reach a deal with the betting exchange technology. Betting exchanges have been a thorn in the side of conventional bookmakers since their introduction at the beginning of the 21st Century, and Ladbrokes were amongst those who supported William Hill’s attempts to urge the government to ban them. It was argued that betting exchanges allow their users to take bets without a licence.

Ladbrokes no longer accepts customers from Greece or Cyprus.

Due to legislative changes, Ladbrokes will stop operating in Greece and Cyprus as of January 2012. They are therefore shutting our site to new registrations and will stop taking bets with immediate effect.

Discussions had been taking place regarding Ladbrokes placing a bid for Sportingbet, however Ladbrokes deemed that Sportingbet’s Turkish gambling website Superbahis was too risky due to Gambling restrictions in Turkey. However East Pioneer Corporation, a subsidiary of GVC holdings (the group who owns Betboo), have now acquired Superbahis off Sportingbet in a consideration said to be worth around £120m.

Ladbrokes are running out of time in their pursuit for the acquisition Sportingbet. If Ladbrokes do not make a formal offer by the middle of this month they will be forced to halt negotiations until June next year. The moot point appears to be the sale of the Turkish arm of Sportingbet. This issue could be overcome if GVC Holding PLC (The group which owns brands such as Betboo, Casino Club and Betaland) act on their interest of Sportingbet’s Turkish business.
